How Do We Calculate Material Balance?

TABLE OF CONTENTS

We use Inventory Transaction Entries (ITE) reference to operate with material balance. Each reference record presents a material movement within a single transaction. As this reference is mostly a system reference, transaction entries are not available for editing.

Types of Transaction Entries

There are 3 types of ITE:

  • IN PROGRESS – an intermediate state of transaction entry. It indicates the amount of material in the process of being transferred to a particular warehouse. Can be positive or negative depending on the ITJ type.
  • PULL – shows material being withdrawn from the selected warehouse. Always has a negative amount.
  • PUSH – this is the QTY received at a given warehouse. Always positive.

When Transaction Entries are generated

ITEs are automatically created for each material in the Bill of Material or ITJ when:

1. An Original BOM is kitted → create PULL entries. A Return BOM is completed → PUSH entries.

2. ITJ is executed.

  • A positive IN PROGRESS entry for Purchase, Adjust (+) transactions.
  • A negative IN PROGRESS entry for Adjust (-) transactions.
  • For a Transfer type of the ITJ, it creates two entries:
  • a positive entry for the warehouse TO which a material is being transferred
  • and the negative one for the warehouse FROM which the material is removed.

When you confirm the ITJ, this changes the type of Transaction Entries associated with the ITJ:

  • A positive IN PROGRESS ITE → PUSH ITE
  • A negative IN PROGRESS ITE → PULL ITE

When Transaction Entries are deleted

For correct material balance, the system deletes Inventory Transaction Entries when:

1. You cancel a BOM.

2. You cancel an ITJ or close short of it.

Material Balance

To calculate the material balance in a warehouse, we take the corresponding Inventory Transaction Entries for a selected or current date.

Actual QTY = PUSH and PULL ITEs - negative IN PROGRESS ITEs

All materials already received and withdrawn from this warehouse, and materials that now in transit from this warehouse.

QTY In Progress  = positive IN PROGRESS ITEs

All materials in the process of being transferred into the warehouse.
